Being a travel agent can be a really fun and rewarding job, and the pay can be quite good too, but it is not an easy industry to get into. There will be quite a lot of competition but if you think you have the people skills, the flexible mindset needed and the sales drive required, then if you follow our point by point guide you stand a good chance to get a travel agent job.

1. Get a good education. Although most travel agents will not require you to have a degree or anything like that, they will look closely at your results from high school. As you would imagine with the nature of the job, good results in humanities type subjects will go down well. If you do want to do a degree first, then you should consider studying travel and tourism. Any computing qualifications will probably help you enormously too because a lot of your work in the office will be carried out on computer.

2. Find a travel agent society. These can be found online, and it is a great community to get to know if you are trying to break into the industry. As you meet more people through this so you will understand more about the industry and the jobs, and you might even come across someone who can either recommend a job to you, or recommend you for a job!

3. Search online for jobs. The need to do this really depends on whether or not you want to move away from your current location. If you want to stay where you are at the moment then you can probably find what you are looking for in local papers, but the same jobs will also be online, and it doesn’t hurt to see opportunities further afield.

4. Expand your knowledge. Before any interviews, think about what a travel agent needs to do. The answer to this is to meet the requirements of each and every client or potential client. This means being able to give recommendations for alternative
destinations and to do this you need to know the world. No one expects you to jump on an around the world tip, but you can do some research into some of the most popular tourist destinations and this will help you to help your clients should you get the job, and it will help you impress your interviewer at the interview!
