How To Get A Tutoring Job
Most tutors supplement the study people are already doing. This means that you might be able to help a student do some extra study for some important exams coming up, or you might be able to offer year round work to a student who feels that they are weak in one particular subject. If you are great working one on one with people and also enjoy teaching small groups, then this could be a great job for you. If you are interested in how to maximise your chances of gaining work in this way, read our tips to help you get a tutoring job.
1. Get qualified. Even if you plan to work for yourself in a freelance capacity, you will still need qualifications to persuade students to take you up on your work. A bachelor’s degree in your chosen field, or even better still a masters degree will help you to find the clients you are looking for. If you are hoping to land a tutoring job with a local school then getting one of these qualifications is all the more important.
2. List yourself with work agencies. You may well find that a lot of schools will go through temping agencies to find tutors to work for them at short notice. You should hand your resume in to all of the agencies in your local district.
3. Advertise your services. You should have an advert for your tutoring online, in your local paper, and in your local schools if possible. Try to make it friendly and light hearted because a large proportion of your clients will be of school age.
4. Have an online presence. Sites such as LinkedIn are great for building up a professional profile and you will find that most regular teachers have a profile on these sites. If they need tutoring work doing for any of their students and you have connected with them on the site then it will be easy for them to get in touch with you so that you can offer the supplemental teaching.
5. Get premises. It could be intimidating for some people to come to your house to be tutored by you, so you should try to get your own business premises. You can also offer to travel to work, which will help you expand the area in which you can work in, and it will be another option for people not wanting to visit a stranger’s house.
