How to get a Nanny job

Becoming a nanny can be one of the most rewarding jobs you can do. Finding work in this area can be quite easy, if you know how to go about it. Read our hints and tips to help you get ahead of the game and get the nanny jobs you want!

1. Qualifications. First of all, having qualifications is not a prerequisite for being a nanny, but it will help you. Having a degree in child care will obviously help you but sometimes something that is easier to obtain is just as useful. The main thing is that you have experience of children. If you think you are lacking in the qualifications area, then try to do something to improve that situation that you can do quickly; get a background check done on yourself, take a first aid course and sort out some references from previous work.

2. Start to advertise. This is the sort of job where you do not go looking for work, you advertise yourself as being available. There are plenty of worthy places to advertise. Find some nanny sites online, and use the boards on the sites to advertise your services. You should also make some leaflets to distribute to local coffee shops and schools and libraries in order to find work. You can also advertise for a small fee in your local paper, which should be well read by your target market.

3. Don’t be blind to opportunity. Whilst it is important to advertise your services wherever you can, still keep an eye out for people advertising for a nanny. You should be able to sign up to nanny agencies which will then refer parents in need of a nanny to you!

4. Be open at interview. Parents want to leave their child with someone who seems relaxed and easily approachable. Try to talk openly about your experiences with children, and have some nice anecdotes ready to amuse them with. Just relax and let your experience do the talking. The less nervous you are, the more likely they are to trust you to look after their children.

The most important thing of all is to show your passion for children. If you can do this, and follow our instructions, you should have plenty of nanny jobs in no time at all!
