How to get a Park Ranger job


There is a lot to being a Park Ranger. You need to be able to communicate well with the public, have a strong personality, and understand the nature surrounding you at all times. Your main duty is to protect the people using the park, and that means acting as a law enforcement officer at times, and acting as guide at other times. You will also be expected to liaise with scientists regarding environmental issues, so you will need a great understanding of the science of the area you work in. 1. Getting qualified. The first thing you need go do is get at least a bachelors degree in either Park Management, forestry, outdoor recreation, natural history or environmental science to go straight into the position on a full time basis.

2. Gain work experience. Get in touch with the Park’s to see if you can get some work experience. Most parks will offer this opportunity but competition will be strong, so make sure that you apply early in the year and show flexibility.

3. Try to find part time work first. Not many parks will allow someone with absolutely no experience walk straight in and take over as a park ranger. You need a few years experience, and a great way to start is by working part time. To get part time or seasonal work you will need a certificate in first aid at the very least.

4. Stand out from the crowd. To do this, you really need to almost over qualify yourself. Try to make your resume look like you have gone beyond the minimum necessary for this type of work. One of the things you can do to manage this is to train for a seasonal law enforcement certification . This entails about 300 hours of training but it will stand you in great stead for the jobs that become available.
