How to get a dental assistant job
Working with other people’s teeth is not everyone’s cup of tea, but if you have a passion for helping people and want to work in a dental clinic then there are some great pieces of advice we can give you.
1. Make sure you are properly qualified. You will have a hard time making it as a dental assistant if you come from the completely wrong background. This doesn’t mean you have to have scientific degree’s spilling out of you to be able to land the role, but the right sort of history is helpful. You will want to take some chemistry and biology courses both at high school and after high school in a perfect world. Beyond this you really need to take a dental assistant training course, which should last for between one and two years and is available at most junior and community colleges.
2. Work on your bedside manner. A lot of dentists these days do not have the best bedside manner, and a lot of them rely on their dental assistants to please their clients. It is important for you to be polite, courteous and friendly without overstepping a professional line.
3. Learn the language. Dentistry is a very technical subject, and there are very scientific names and numbers for all of the teeth. You will be expected to know all of this inside out when you start your job, so it is important that you can demonstrate your knowledge in an interview situation.
4. Create a resume which shows your dedication to a career as a dental assistant. Your resume should ideally show a desire from as young an age as possible to work as a dental assistant. You can do this by discussing how your high school science subjects helped you understand more about dentistry and go on to explain that your choices of courses at a later date were guided by your professional ambitions.
5. Distribute your resume. Your Resume needs to go to e very single dentist’s office in your area. It is a competitive field and you cannot afford to miss an opportunity by not spreading your net widely enough.
