How to get a farm job
Some families have a history of farming that goes back as far as their family tree, but that doesn’t preclude people from different backgrounds getting into the farming industry. It certainly can be difficult to find work on farms without any specific education or experience, but that is not to say it is impossible. Here we will give you some valuable tips on how to get a farm job, whatever angle you are approaching from.
1. Select the type of farming you are interested in. There are dozens of different fields of farming for you to enter into, and you really need to decide this before going down the route of trying to find the right job. You can consider Dairy farming, Meat farming, Grain farming, Vegetable farming, organic farming and fiber farming to name a few.
2. Get qualified. We have to state here that this is not a necessity, but it will certainly help. After your high school diploma there are lots of agricultural colleges which will give you a great grounding in the various different areas of work on the farm, and a qualification from one of these colleges will give you a much greater chance of landing a job at the end of it.
3. Look into the possibility of apprenticeships. This can be a great move after college, because although you have no experience at this stage, it is easy for farmers to see that you have already dedicated a large proportion of your life to farming in college, and this will give them belief that you are worth their efforts to train you.
4. Look for voluntary work. If you have no experience and you have not qualified, this might be your best chance of finding your way into farming. It will be tough going at first but if you prove yourself quickly then there is no reason why you shouldn’t progress onto a full time paid position. It is important if you are making this sort of offer that you establish a time frame for your free labour. Put a limit on it at the beginning and hope that your work speaks for itself in that short period of time.
Farming is a hard industry to get into, and it is a hard industry to work in, but if you can get there it can be richly rewarding to be working the land. Stick to our tips to give yourself a hope of achieving your aim.
