How to get a finance job
Working in finance can be a very rewarding career when it comes to money. Several surveys have it in the top five for most financially rewarding industries in America, and with a statistic like that, there is sure to be a lot of competition. That is not to say that opportunities do not exist. You just need to work hard and make sure you do everything right. Here are some pointers for you.
1. Become well qualified. This really depends on how high up the tree you wish to climb, but if you have ambitions of reaching the top then you need a good degree in an appropriate subject like accountancy or business finance.
2. Search for banks with vacancies for financial advisors. Banks are more likely than most to take on rookies coming out of college. The pay can be less than with other companies but you will get a great grounding in the job and a solid wage.
3. Find a company that offers supplemental fees. This would normally be a financial company which will pay you a decent salary while you build up your list of clients. As your client list grows your salary will actually drop, but your commission rates will increase and eventually outstrip your original salary that you started on.
4. Create a resume that can go out to all of these institutions. You will need to build in some generalities here, but the jobs are fairly similar so it shouldn’t be too much of a problem. Highlight all of your grades that you feel are significant, even going back to high school, and strongly outline your ambitions. People want confidence because ultimately in this line of work, the more money you make, the more money they make.
5. Get your licenses. You will need to find a registered investment adviser to sponsor you to get your series 7 and series 66 licenses but on occasions you can get state sponsorship too. The sooner you get this the more the likelihood that you will land a great job.
Don’t be afraid to go for this career head on. It can involve a lot of hard work and training but the financial rewards are almost incomparable to anything else you might wish to consider. Stick to the guide and you will give yourself a great chance of success.
