How to get a fire fighter job


Becoming a fire fighter is a very serious undertaking. You are ultimately declaring an interest in a job that is going to at some point in time put you in danger, but it is also a job that has rich rewards. It is tough to become a fire fighter and you will need to follow our tips to give yourself a chance of making it.

1. Meet the criteria. First of all you need to be an American citizen aged 18 years or older.

2. Volunteer first to gain experience. You can give yourself a better chance of being enlisted by working as a volunteer fire fighter first. This will give you invaluable experience and it shows that bosses that you have already had some experience of the job and it has not put you off doing the job on a full time basis.

3. Find out what the application process is with your department’s fire service. They all differ slightly, and you will be able to find out everything you need to know.

4. Get in shape quick! Anyone who wants to work as a fire fighter has to be in great shape physically. In order to become a fire fighter you need to pass the various tests. There are books out there to help you prepare for all of this, and it is well worth trying to track these guides down.

5. Get help with your initial application. If you have already dome some work as a volunteer, it might be possible for you to talk to a fire fighter from the department who may be willing to help you with your application

6. Sit the exam required by your department. Again these exams differ from state to state and when the time comes you will have been informed as to whether or not you will be tested on your fire safety knowledge. Some departments will just give you a reading and writing test.

7. Be ready for background checks. This will probably eliminate you if you have any previous felonies.
