How to get a government job

In our current economic climate it can be difficult to find jobs, but there is always one employer willing to take new people on. Here we look to give you the necessary tips which are necessary to land a job with the government.

1. Match your abilities to a government post. There are all sorts of different posts available within the US government but you need to be clear which position would suit you best and what position you would qualify for. You also need to decide what area of the US government you would like to work for.

2. Utilise your resources. You will need to find out what positions are available in order to find the right position for you, so start by using the internet to search for vacancies in your area. It is also a good idea to find out all of the different government offices within your catchment area so that you can approach them direct to ascertain whether or not there are any available positions for you.

3. Be sure to get your bills paid! A lot of the departments that issue fines are government run agencies, so if you have any outstanding parking tickets, then you had better get them paid! Nobody is going to give you a job if you already owe them money! You can also help yourself by making sure your income tax is clean because the IRS is a provider of government jobs to many people and it would be a shame if this was one area of government work which you had to disregard.

4. Understand their language. US government posts are full of acronyms and to work in government office is to understand all of these. Make sure that you know your OMB from your SAR!

5. Be patient. It can take a very long time for job applications to be processed by government offices, so do not assume that you do not have the position if you have not yet heard back. Continue your government job search but keep an eye out for previous applications, and don’t be afraid to follow up applications from some time ago.

Good luck with your search for a government job. Make sure you utilise these tips in order to maximise your chances of success.
