How to get a job on a cruise ship

Some people spend their lives dreaming of what it would be like to have a glamorous job like working on a cruise ship, but the truth is, these dreamers could have been working towards that very achievable goal instead of thinking about it! Here we give you some tips on how to find the perfect cruise ship job for you.

1. Use the internet. The internet is a great place to start your search. There are 130,000 new cruise ship jobs available every single year and nearly every single one of them is advertised online somewhere. Find out where the cruise ship jobs are being advertised for ships in your area, and see what you can find out.

2. Work out what sort of role would suit you best. Cruise ships are almost like towns in the sea, there is so much to them. Because of this, each cruise liner will have hundreds if not thousands of different jobs going, from barmen, chefs, waiters, casino staff, engineering staff, hair salon staff, musicians, gift shop staff and a whole host of other positions. It is up to you to decide what sort of role you would be best qualified for and work towards finding a position that you think you have a good chance of making your own.

3. Put together a great resume. You need to show qualifications, ambition and responsibility. No cruise ship wants to employ someone who is not going to pull their weight, because they will be stuck with you! They will also not be looking for someone who thinks the opportunity to see the world is more important than the job, so keep focused on your skills, rather than the opportunities they will be offering you. You also need to make sure that you send out as many resume’s as possible, to all of the cruise ship companies, which should be traceable on the internet.

4. Present yourself well. Have you ever seen a member of a cabin crew on board a cruise ship look anything but immaculate? I didn’t think so. Presentation is of paramount importance so think carefully before dressing for any interview and I would strongly recommend a fresh short haircut!

5. Be friendly. Whatever position you look to fill on a cruise ship, you will undoubtedly be coming into contact with the clientele. This means that you will have to be as polite as possible at all times, and anyone interviewing you will expect to see a very sunny disposition.

Good luck and keep smiling!
