How to get a political job

If you feel strongly about how your country is run, and you are passionate about local, national and global issues then a political career could be the thing for you. There are hundreds of different careers to be had in the spectrum of political jobs, ranging from local campaigning, right up to working your way to becoming your countries leader! To find out how best to break into this industry, read on.

1. Understand your passion. You need to define who you are in terms of your political beliefs, because it is normal to have to side with one of the political parties in your home nation. Even at grass roots level, most people involved in politics are linked to a specific party.

2. Educate yourself in the right way. If you are still of an age where you are following your normal educational route, then you ought to consider some politics based courses. Obviously a degree in politics or a political science subject will help you immeasurably, but it is certainly not a barrier to succeeding in this industry. What is more relevant is what you will learn from the subjects you study. You obviously need to become an expert in the field of politics, and this will help you to do just that.

3. Become known. A large part of working your way into politics is by volunteering and creating a presence. If you are working on the ground floor of an operation, helping out by handing out fliers, and generally offering your services for the cause, it will only be a matter of time before you can start to exert more influence.

4. Move. Unless you want to stay involved in local small town politics for the rest of your life, you may want to consider moving to a large city or even your nation’s capital. This is where all of the big decisions are made, and it is also where all of the biggest opportunities are.

5. Research the political parties you wish to join. You need to know your parties policies inside out to have a chance of joining them at a meaningful level. The way to succeed in politics is to be knowledgeable, confident and smart. Only one of these traits can be learned.

6. Contact the political party formally. You may already have done volunteer work for the party but to actually work for them you need to put together an impressive letter which shows both your understanding of their principles, and your knowledge of their work. Be polite but confident, and make it clear that you see your political career with them.
