Airline Jobs
Working for an airline can cover any number of jobs, from washing a plane to flying it. Airlines are large organisations, and if you’d like to work for one the chances are you would be able to find an opening that matches your talents and abilities. Airline crew, the people who fly you safely to your destination, represent the public face of an airline. But down on the ground there are teams of people in airline jobs working in administration, customer services, security and mechanics.
Many people considering an airline job will be attracted to the idea of becoming a flight attendant. There’s hot competition for these jobs because of their glamorous reputation and the opportunity for frequent travel, often international. The reality is that the work is hard, though rewarding for people with good communication skills who enjoy working in customer service. You will stand a good chance of being considered for flight attendant training if you look neat, well groomed and attractive. Airlines consider their cabin crews to be their public ‘face’ and most have grooming requirements – some airlines frown on facial hair for male flight attendants, for example.
Customer service experience is a big plus for anyone considering an airline job working directly with passengers – flight attendants need to stay calm and professional at all times. Although a high school degree is the minimum qualification needed to apply for one of these sought after jobs, preference is usually given to people who have experience of dealing with the public. If you have some knowledge of a second language, that is a bonus too. Salaries vary according to the airline, but there are a variety of benefits on offer, such as the chance to travel, and expenses paid for overnight hotel stops and meals. An average starting salary would be around $22,000 a year, rising with experience.
