An airline customer service job is an ideal occupation for someone who enjoys meeting and helping members of the public. Whenever you take a plane trip, on holiday or on business, you’ll be helped at each stage of your journey by people working in customer service for the airline.

There are as many job openings as there are airlines, starting at the call centre where queries are answered, tickets sold and information about delays and flight times given out to passengers who ring in. If you think you would enjoy working at this type of call centre, you will need to be able to use a computer to access ticket and flight information and have a good telephone manner. You’ll also need to be able to keep a cool head with difficult customers and have the ability to handle complaints in a calm, professional way.

If you prefer a career working in direct contact with people, you might consider an airline customer service job based at an airport, where the day to day duties would include giving out boarding passes and seat assignments, looking after late and standby passengers and making public announcements about expected flights.

Whether you’re dealing with people on the phone or in person, it’s important to have excellent communication skills. The airlines are looking for people who are good listeners and able to cope with all the problems that can crop up in a busy airport scenario. When things get stressful, as they often do because of flight delays or similar problems, an airline relies on its customer service staff to stay calm under pressure.

It’s an ideal career to consider if you have no degree or other qualification, although most airlines prefer to employ people with a high school diploma. Salaries will vary according to the size of the airline, but the average yearly pay is around $32,000.
