Airport Jobs

Airports are worlds of their own, especially major international airports. Behind their vast walls and beyond on the tarmac exists a world of job opportunities almost too numerous to list. The sheer variety of jobs on offer means that most people, whatever their skills or qualifications, can find an occupation or career to suit them. Taking care of passengers is the common theme that unites the holders of airport jobs, whether by ensuring the safety of the aircraft, working in security or handling baggage. An airport job can put you on the path to a rewarding career in a stimulating environment.

If you are good at technology or mechanically minded, there are many airport jobs in your field. Aircraft maintenance crew are based at most airports, alongside safety inspectors and cabin mechanics. There are vital airport jobs in the emergency services, whose personnel include firefighters, police and medics. These are posts that require special training, but most airports have plenty of alternative job opportunities for people without academic or vocational qualifications, with opportunities for promotion once you have gained experience.

An airport job can mean working with the public, in customer service or in one of the many concessions to be found in most airports, or behind the scenes, for example as a baggage handler or freight handler. The airport building needs to be well maintained and welcoming to passengers, so there are always opportunities for airport custodians who perform janitorial work and are responsible for general upkeep.

At the top of the tree sits the Airport Director, responsible for the overall running of the airport, whose duties include planning, staffing and overseeing operations in general. Salaries for airport jobs vary as much as the range of jobs available – from around $10 per hour for a baggage handler to the $100,000 plus salaries paid to top airport executives.
