Appliance Repair Jobs
Most of us own more appliances than ever before, and the chances are they will all break down at some point. That’s why choosing an appliance repair job will take you into a growing industry, with many good career openings.
Current employment is highest in building equipment, dry cleaning and laundry services, electronics, the gas industry and household goods, such as washers, dryers and refrigerators. Someone in an appliance repair job might work in a company warehouse or workshops, or visit customers in their homes to make on-the-spot repairs. If the idea of an appliance repair job appeals to you, you could be on the path to starting your own repair business – almost 30 per cent of the people working in this field are self-employed.
Qualities needed to get an appliance repair job include technical ability and good communication skills. Dealing with customers is an important part of the work, and you would be expected to answer questions, handle complaints and give advice. A college degree is not a necessary qualification for an appliance repair job – many technicians receive on-the-job training – but technical aptitude is important, and candidates are advised to look for additional training, through trade schools or their employers, so that they can pass a written examination to become certified in proper handling of appliances.
Technicians handling portable appliances will usually work in repair shops – with larger items, such as washing machines, it is customary to visit the customer’s home. This may involve hours a day driving between appointments and responding to emergency calls, so a flexible approach is needed.
