Architecture Jobs

An architecture job is an excellent career choice for people who care about the design of their surroundings, from the buildings they occupy to the gardens and parks they enjoy. Although qualified architects take the overall responsibility for building design – and undertake a long training before they are able to do so – there are many other openings in associated fields.

If you are the sort of person who enjoys working out of doors and has a concern for the environment and conservation issues, you would probably enjoy the life of a landscape architect. People who succeed in this growing industry are creative, but practical too, with good design and drawing skills. Knowledge of plants and wildlife, and the conditions they need to flourish, is also important. There are many openings in this type of architecture job, where the work involves designing and creating landscapes in places like public parks, the areas around public buildings, new roads, industrial sites and housing estates. This is one of the fastest growing professions, open to people with a bachelor’s degree and usually by way of a one-year internship.

A busy architectural practice will usually have openings at many levels, from administrative to technical, to provide the support system needed by the architects to carry out their design duties. Many people gain their first architecture job as an architectural assistant, working to improve their technical skills and knowledge of planning. This post can be the first step on the career ladder and, although some basic architectural qualifications are usually necessary, it’s possible for a student to get a job as an assistant in order to gain experience and receive first-hand tuition.

Experienced landscape architects can earn an average of $62,000 a year, whilst an architectural assistant with a degree can expect to earn around $40,000 per year, a figure that can rise steeply with further training and experience.
