Assistant Professor Jobs
If you are a great communicator and enjoy working with a range of different people then the position of assistant professor could be a great choice for you. The requirements to get into this type of work is slightly less stringent than full professor jobs, so if you don’t have all of the qualifications required to become a professor, then this might be an excellent way to break into the teaching profession.
You will however need to be qualified to a certain degree to be able to move into this work. Most Universities prefer to take people on who have completed a doctoral program in their preferred discipline will be looked on more favourably than those who have not. So you need to be qualified to a certain level, but the position of assistant professor is great for those who do not want to spend years qualifying to become a proper professor.
This position is a great way to learn about the ins and outs of being a professor. You will work alongside a professor and help them with the administrative side of the job. You will at times conduct lessons on behalf of the professor which will be invaluable in terms of experience for you.
Career progression differs from institution to institution, but at some universities and colleges there will be the opportunity for you to progress to full professor status, and you may be able to qualify for this post as you do the work of the assistant profession, if your particular post allows this.
Although not as well paid as a full professor, assistant professors can still expect to make enough money to do quite well for themselves. The average wage at the moment is $60,000 - $65,000 although this obviously varies depending on the institution.
