Journalist Resumes
As a Journalist you will have excellent attention to detail, an understanding of what is required from you from reading text and the ability to put your thoughts in to words very easily. You need to apply all of these skills when you are putting together your Journalist Resume and cover letter.
You should start things off with a Journalist cover letter. This is a great opportunity for you to introduce yourself to your potential employers. You should start by formally applying for the job, and you should use the opportunity to explain why you think you should be considered for the post. You can mention your training and your working experience but keep this to a minimum because you will be talking about the same subjects in your Journalist Resume and you don’t really want to cover the same ground twice.
Once you have finished your Journalist cover letter you should start to prepare your Journalist Resume. Start this off with an objective. This should be a statement which indicates what sort of post you are looking for. You should use the job description as a guide here and make sure that you show that you are looking for the sort of job that you have seen advertised.
Follow this section with some information about your key skills. Start off by saying how many years experience you have, and then go on to list some of your main skills in the job. You should mention things like your ability to report accurately and with a great writing flair, you should also mention your ability to edit other people’s work, and you should mention whether or not you are good with headlines and if you have any sub editing experience.
The next section of your Journalist Resume should detail your professional experience. You should be looking to go through all of your previous jobs in reverse order, giving details about what was expected of you in each post. You should mention what sort of stories you were asked to report on, whether you were just a reporter, or whether you were allowed to do feature stories, and you should indicate if you had any regular features in any of your previous publications.
The final section of your Journalist Resume should be a detailed report on your qualifications. Ideally you will have a bachelors degree in Journalism, but it is equally acceptable for you to have a degree in another subject and for you to have taken a post graduate course in Journalism. Explain if you have done any unpaid work experience here too, because it shows a dedication to the profession.
