Paralegal Resumes


To be a paralegal you need to know law inside out, as well as be prepared to do the leg work for Lawyers and Attorneys. Despite the sound of the job, it is a highly coveted position and competition for the position is fierce. For this reason, you need to make sure that your Paralegal Resume and cover letter is as good as it can possibly be.

You should kick off any application with a Paralegal cover letter. This will allow you to introduce yourself to the reader, it will allow you to apply formally for the position, and it will also give you the chance to explain why you think that you should be the person chosen for the position. In doing this, you may well decide to rely upon your qualifications for justification as to why you should be selected, but try to remember that you will be discussing your qualifications in fine detail when it comes to your Paralegal Resume, so keep the information brief in your cover letter.

Once you have completed the Paralegal cover letter, you should start with your resume. Make sure that you start this document off with an objective. This is a statement which explains what sort of position you are looking for. It is important to be concise and specific here, but you also need to make sure that your objective matches the job description.

The next section of your Paralegal Resume should focus on your skills in the job. Indicate first how many years you have been working as a paralegal, and then go on to list what you believe to be your most important skills in the job. You should look to mention things like your ability to work independently in all areas of litigation, you should indicate a fine knowledge of your particular niche area, such as matrimonial affairs, but again, make sure this matches the niche of the job which you are applying for. You could also mention your ability to work as part of a team and your ability to hit deadlines and cope with pressure.

The next section of your Paralegal Resume should focus on your professional experience. Try to list all of your previous positions starting with your most recent and working backwards. Talk about each position in depth and explain what was expected of you in each role. Duties may have been things like furnishing the client with information in order to free up time for your senior colleagues, office management, legal document preparation and bookmarking, filing and some aspects of case research.

The final section of your Paralegal Resume should be about your qualifications. Ideally you will have a degree based background, although it is not critical for this to have been a law based degree. Something vaguely relevant is always helpful though, so if you have a degree in something like social care, or sociology or social science this would fit the bill. You will also need to have a Paralegal certificate in order to work in most states as a Paralegal.
