Have you ever wondered why you couldn’t land a job? Much less get to the point of getting an interview? Well, if you’ve applied to a hundred job openings and still got no luck, I suggest you check your resume.

Many people commit the mistake of creating very “wordy” resumes that would only end up boring their interviewer. When you want to create a very impressive resume, you have to keep in mind the position that you are applying for and only list related job experiences that would impress your prospect employer. Anything unrelated should be omitted from your resume’s content. The less unrelated stuff it contains, the more presentable and interesting your resume becomes.

Writing resumes can sometimes be difficult especially for starters who don’t know what their resume should contain. We have listed several tips to guide you in your resume writing.

1. Decide and determine your resume type - You cannot generate a sensible resume unless you decide the type of resume you are going to use. Depending on the conditions, you can always choose amongst chronological, functional, or a combination resume. Always make sure you consider the advantages and disadvantages of each resume type before using them.

2. Plan on the content - The usual mistake in resume writing is job seekers stuff their resume with all their qualifications and achievements. It should only contain achievements that are relevant to the position being applied for. Omit anything else that is unnecessary or unrelated to the position.

3. Use concise words/use brief sentences - Most employers would usually look for keywords in your resume and would not spend more than ten minutes reading it. In fact, most employers will only spend 15 seconds going over each resume before deciding if it is good for an interview or if it deserves to end in the trash bin. So be brief in describing your achievements and use rich keywords. Remember, a resume is an overview of your accomplishments, not an essay.

4. Proofread your resume – Before sending or submitting your resumes, have someone proofread it aside from you. Most of the time, what seemed good to you is otherwise for others. So it is better to ask someone to check for wrong grammar, punctuations and even typographical errors. You wouldn’t want employers to think that you don’t know how to spell right? So make your resume, as flawless as possible.

5. Do not fabricate – Believe me, nothing could be worse than getting caught in your web of lies. Deceit will not get you anywhere. It could even damage your reputation and totally wreck your chances of landing a good, decent job.

6. Customize your resume - Resumes vary from one job posting to another. You should tailor suit your resume for every job application. Do not simply “copy and paste”. If you want to nail it, go ahead and personalize each resume for the job you are applying for.

7. Seek advice – For first time job applicants who would want to make an impression by creating the finest resume, you may attend resume workshops or seminars. You can also purchase books on resume writing or visit a library.
