Which Resume Writing Format Should You Use?


There is a fallacy that there is only one resume writing format but this is completely wrong. There are many different formats that can be used when writing a resume and it is important to understand all the different types. See below for the resume writing format that is best for you:

• A simple resume is one that does not have any formatting and that can be copied and pasted into online forms. The formatting would be lost if this were done with another type of resume and it could render the pasted information as illegible which does not get you the job.

• When deciding on a resume writing format, the chronological resume is perfect when you have many years of experience that is relevant to the position you are applying for.

• If you are looking for a job that you do not have a great deal of experience doing, then the functional resume is your best bet. This allows you to highlight your skills rather than your experience.

• A targeted resume can use any of the above formats but is simply directed at the company that you are applying to and not the position. This is perfect when you are seeking a position that may not be listed as open.

Any time you use more than one format, it is called a combination resume and is a good option when you are targeting or highlighting skills but still want to include experience too. All of these formats should be employed when looking for a job. Make sure that you have at least one simple resume writing format for any online forms you may be required to submit.
