This article provides information on Tips On Salary Negotiation
One of the most common topics of concern for those in the career world is that of salary. So many of us-whether we are recent college grads or in the prime of our careers, concern ourselves with how much will we make, how much to ask for, and how much salary to expect. Most importantly, people in every industry have no idea what the correct tips for negotiating salary are. This said, we review the most basic tips on how to negotiate salary for the optimum salary success in an interview.
1. Have a Number in Mind: Make sure before you have even left for the interview for the position you are seeking to have a salary number in mind. This number should be built upon your research for salary in your area, your position, and your amount of experience/qualifications. Also, consider how valuable you may be above and beyond what they may be asking for in the job posting. Most importantly about having a number in mind, is that you need to have argument in mind as to why you deserve that salary.
2. Timing is Everything: Though you may be asked what your intended salary is, never bring up salary prior to the actual job offer. Why? Because you could easily affect whether you get the job or not. If you ask for way out of the range that they are considering prior to getting an offer, they could base their hiring decision on just that. Now, if they ask what your intended salary range is prior to making an offer; make sure to offer a range if you want to give a number. If you are uncomfortable with this altogether, tell them that you are flexible and would be happy to discuss a salary range once offered the job.
3. Have a Walk Away Number: Though you may want the job really badly, you need to have a walk away number for salary-a number that is just too low for you to work with them. So, if you are offered the job at a certain number and this number is below your lowest number; you have to be prepared to walk away. Moreover, this is not to say that they will let you either.
4. Benefits: Many people forget to factor in the value of benefits to the salary negotiation package. Benefits such as health insurance, pension, and various spending accounts and perks should always be presented when discussing salary. When it is being discussed, know that you should be able to accept a less salary income, as the value is increased dramatically by the addition of certain benefits.
5. Sleep on It: No matter what the salary offer may be-unless it is way below what you can accept-make sure to sleep on the number and the benefits package. Unfortunately, once we have been offered a job; many of us are not in our right mind-as we are just so thrilled to be chosen. This is not the right frame of mind to be making decisions in; as you might accept an offer too low that you will regret later. Take 24 hours and your hiring manager will understand-to think it all over-weighing the positives and negatives.
