Publishing Resumes
Your Publishing resume will be shaped by the type of position you have held within the publishing business. If you have spent a large part of your career working in the marketing department of a Publishing firm then your Publishing Resume will have a similar feel to it as of a marketing Resume etc.
There is one thing that is a constant with any resume which is being presented to a Publishing firm – it must be written extremely well. Most people involved in the Publishing industry have come from a writing background of some kind and writing is what they are selling, so if you don’t write well, it is going to be noticed. There is no special approach to be taken because of this when you put together you Publishing Resume but it is something that you should have in your head the whole time you are working on it. Just make sure that everything you do is edited and edited again to avoid any grammatical problems. Try to keep your work succinct and the writing style sharp.
The first task of your application should be your Publishing cover letter. This should be short and to the point, whilst getting across all of the necessary points you need to make. These include which position you are applying for, why you want to work for this company and why they should employ you. A couple of things to remember here is that you should do a little research on their company so that you can be effusive in your praise for them when saying why you want to work for them, and when you are discussing why you are suitable for the position make sure not to go into detail about your previous experience and training. This must be mentioned, but there will be more detail about this in the Resume, so you don’t want to cover old ground.
Once you have completed your cover letter you should move onto your Publishing Resume. Your Resume should start off with an objective, which will demonstrate what sort of position you are looking for. This should be a catchy and punchy statement which sums up your working goals and matches the description of the job you are applying for. This can be tricky, particularly when the people reading are well versed in good writing skills so take your time.
Follow this section with your Professional experience. This should work backwards from your current position and you should make sure to expand on all of the relevant positions – particularly if the position is very similar to the one for which you are applying.
Finish your Publishing resume off with a section about your Education. Again, this section should run in reverse order and you should look to go into quite a bit of detail about any qualifications which are specific to the world of Publishing. If you did a business Degree, you can talk about the aspects of the qualification which will help you as a publisher. If you did an English Degree, you can discuss your ability to spot good writing when you see it. Try to go beyond what an average Resume would show you, and you will be halfway towards gaining that crucial interview!
