Archivists acquire, manage and maintain documents and other materials that have historical importance for individuals and organizations. Archivists involve in making information accessible to users, increasingly in digital format. Users include researchers, academics, other professional staff and the general public. An archivist is also involved in appraising, editing, and direct safekeeping of permanent records and historically valuable documents. Archivists participate in research activities based on archival materials.
Work activities of an archivist includes evaluating records for preservation and retention; arranging the acquisition and retrieval of records; preparing record-keeping systems and procedures for archival research and for the retention or destruction of records; prepares or directs preparation of document descriptions and reference aids for use of archives, such as accession lists, indexes, guides, bibliographies, abstracts, and microfilmed copies of documents; directs filing and cross indexing of selected documents in alphabetical and chronological order and many more.
