Technology Resumes

When writing your Technology Resume it is easy to think that because your subject is one based in science, there is no need for you to show any flair for writing and therefore you can skip writing a Technology cover letter. Think again! Although you are not expected to show flair or passion for writing, in this day and age you have to be able to show that you are a good communicator and this will come through if you write a thorough but concise Technology cover letter.

Start your letter by confirming which job you are applying for and where you saw the advert. Follow this with a little information about your history in the job and how this makes you the right candidate for the job. You can also mention your education if you have qualifications specific to the post, but try not to get too carried away with this – you can leave the detail of your schooling and work for your Technology Resume.

Make sure you sign off your Cover letter with a polite but persistent sentence, asking for an interview. With a little bit of luck, you will have done at least enough for your potential employer to have a look at your Resume!

Your Technology Resume needs to be equally engaging. Nobody is asking you to re write Shakespeare, but try to add a little invention to your tired Resume. Of course after listing your name, address and contact details, I would advise starting with a summary of all of your qualifications. In a Technology position, your qualifications are everything so you want them to be as near to the top of the page as possible. You should also look to bullet point these as much as possible and don’t be afraid to use a fairly large font, to make sure that this section stands out from the rest. Follow your Qualifications section with a similar section for and certificates you have gained during your career. Again, these should be bullet pointed and in bold.

Next up your Technology Resume should have a detailed list of your professional experience. This should run in reverse chronological order from your last or current position. Unlike your cover letter, you should now be quite happy to go into intricate detail if needed, to explain what you did in your last position. Although your Technical Resume should be an honest appraisal of your achievements to date, you really need to lean each Resume towards the particular job you are going for, so make a bit more of the experience you have that relates particularly to whichever job you are applying for at the time.

Your Education section should also run from your last foray into education, and run backwards to your high school results. In this section give the bare facts, unless a certain achievement is directly related to Technology, in which case you should expand upon the point.

The last section of your Technology Resume should be used to include anything you feel important to your application but hasn’t fallen into any of the other sections. Look upon this section as miscellaneous achievements and fill it with all you can!
