Summary:

Material managers handle all raw materials, equipment and other supplies needed for a company to run. This position often seen in companies involve in manufacturing and medical supplies. The material managers are responsible in overseeing personnel, storage spaces, customer demands and inventories. In addition to materials, they also keep documentation and create a budget of the department. Material managers also search for the best deals for a certain company, looking for the best quality material at the lowest possible cost.

Duties:

The main duty of a material manager is to plan, control and lead the personnel and activities of a central store operation. They provide crucial point in lean manufacturing training as well as performing cycle counts and report regarding the inventory. Material managers are also assigned in administering and planning department budget. In addition, material managers’ duties also include recommending major material and equipment purchases to the director. Once a certain material or equipment is approved, the material manager will obtain the goods, placed in the inventory and will make sure that the proper department receives the goods smoothly and on time.

Education and Training Requirements:

Most material manager holds a Bachelor’s degree of either in administration, logistics, material management, supply chain or any other related field. Undergraduate on the same related fields may need to have a minimum of 2 to 3 years of job experience in material management. Bigger companies may require additional years of experience, such as five or more years in purchasing, planning and manufacturing, in order to obtain the position.

Knowledge and Skills Requirements:

A good negotiation and communication skill is one of the most important traits a material manager should possess. This is required in dealing with suppliers and vendors and gets the most out of the company’s budget. Analytical and the knowledge to expertly plan and organize function is also needed to effectively supervise and delegate work to staff. The ability to assess subordinates’ performance and promote a harmonious working relationship will also manifest effectiveness in the position.

Working Conditions:

Material managers usually work in a comfortable and well-lit office. They work the standard 40 working hours and may render additional ours in meeting deadlines. However in the retail trade, material managers work in the evening and on weekends during holiday seasons. For material managers working in a worldwide company, travel abroad may be required.

Salary:

A material manager’s salary is about $45.34 an hour and an annual compensation of about $94.300.
