Summary:

The webmaster takes care of the analytical part of the website – he/she makes sure that the uptime and availability of the website is close to 100%, if not 100%. Webmasters calculate how fast a webpage loads, adjusts the size accordingly for each web browser, and perform all possible tasks to keep a website from crashing and to block hackers from making the website inaccessible.

Duties:

Webmasters take care of their clients’ websites. They make sure that the websites are bug-free and hack-free. They are in charge of the database in the website. For example, their client is the Yellow Pages. Every time someone subscribes or has their telephone line disconnected, the webmaster must make sure to add or remove the names from the list. They must make sure that the database is always updated. A webmaster must also make banner links for his clients to be posted on other web pages. He/she must always track the individual clicks made on his client’s banner. He/she must always make sure that all the links are working properly and that the videos and audios are streaming properly. Search engine optimization is the key for his/her client’s success.

Education and Training Requirements:

A bachelor’s degree in computer science from any school is needed to become a webmaster. A master’s degree in the same will get you a higher position and may increase your salary and benefits. Even software engineers can make it as a webmaster.

Knowledge and Skills Requirements:

To be a successful webmaster, one must have good oral skills to be able to articulate their ideas to clients well. They must be creative and hardworking. They must know how to create a shopping cart software, know how to use Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop and Dreamweaver. An aspiring webmaster must also know how to create hypertext markup language called the HTML, extensible markup language called the XML, and the cascading style sheets called the CSS.

Working Conditions:

A webmaster can either be a freelancer who works his own time, or someone that is hired to work for a specific company. Company webmasters often have to work in the office and work 8 hours a day, 5 days a week. Freelancers on the other hand look for clients; work in their own office with flexible schedules.

The average salary for a webmaster is $57,000 annually. Their average salary is dictated by its industry and location. It differs per company. Usually, the more experience you have, the higher the salary and the more benefits you receive.
