Follow Up Job Letter

Posted in Job Letters

After you have interviewed with somebody, you may wind up waiting for a while before you receive a response. At the interview, you should ask the interviewer when you can expect a response. If the stated amount of time has elapsed and you still don’t have an answer, you should send a follow up job letter. This letter will let the interviewer know that you are still interested in the job and waiting for a call. You will usually get an answer telling you how far along the process is.

Format and Content

This letter should provide a reminder of who you are and what position you have applied for. It should emphasize that you have not yet received a response following the interview. That allows the company to re-establish contact with you in case a previous communication was lost for any reason. The follow up job letter format works best if you can provide a reminder of your overall qualifications and any interesting items that came up during your interview. This allows you to make sure you are fresh in the minds of the hiring committee. Finally, you should provide your contact information. This is important because it helps ensure that if the information was lost or incorrect, it can now be recovered.

Sample

This example is from a person who interviewed for an accounting position and has not received any follow up for a period of two weeks. In this hypothetical follow up job letter sample, the individual was told to expect a response after this period and is double checking to make sure that no communications were lost. The person also takes the time to provide current contact information and remind the employer of her qualifications for the position. The tone is formal but confident, providing a reminder that the applicant is excited about the position and eager to begin work without giving the feeling that she is desperate.

Dear Mr. Mahoney,

I am writing in follow up to my interview for your open Accountant position which was held on July 31, 2013. At the interview, you had requested that I contact you if I had not heard from you within two weeks. I am writing to reconnect with you regarding the position and reiterate my desire to join your team.

I have eight years of experience in the accounting and financial field, and I believe that my background will be a tremendous asset to your company. I was very pleased with the conversation we had during my interview and am more convinced than ever that I would fit very well with your team.

I can be reached via telephone at (555) 123-4567 or via email at charlotteryder@email.com. If you need me to resend any information to you, please let me know and I will do so happily. Thank you once again for your consideration, and I hope to hear from you soon.
