How To Create A Career Map?

Everyone has a short and long term career map in mind, though many of us have not put in the time, effort, and energy into it. Ever heard of something called the career map? If not, do not be alarmed, as it is just an industry term for an organized view of your career goals. This said, we take a closer look at just what is involved in creating a career map for a successful career.

Self Assessment
The first step to accurately setting up a career map that works is to start a means of assessing where you are in your career, what skills and qualifications you have to offer, and what your goals are. Though it can seem a difficult thing to keep on top of, especially with the daily responsibilities that work commands of you; it is vital to make sure you are at the very least, regularly assessing yourself as a career candidate. What does this mean? Basically, just taking an objective and comprehensive look at what you have to offer a company or industry, as compared with others in your field. Take a look at your present skills-could you gain more to make yourself more marketable? Take a look at your education-could you be taking new classes to enhance your knowledge of new technologies?

Once you have a good idea of what your positives are, as well as how you could enhance your marketability in your field, take a closer look at your career goals. What is your ultimate goal? Is it to become a certain position, advance to a new department, or be the CEO of your own company? Whatever it is, carefully examine the details of your goals and where you are in relation to obtaining them.

Create the Plan
Once you have a good idea of what you have to offer as a candidate in your career path, and also what goals you are working towards; you must now figure how to get from where you are in your career to where you want to be. This is the basis of your career map or plan. Start by creating a perspective of how far you want to plan ahead in your goal setting. So, consider yourself obtaining small and large goals in periods of one year, five years, or ten years-fro example. This way, you can gauge how long it will take you to obtain the goals you have set; while also considering the smaller steps/goals necessary to get there. By creating a plan of measureable achievements, you can keep yourself motivated and on track to achieving the career goals of your dreams.

The Unexpected
Know that no amount of planning and detailed mapping of your future can help you avoid the unexpected. Unexpected events in a person’s life are just part of life, and they can throw all of your previous and future plans into chaos from one day to next. Just know that there will be unexpected events, and be ready with a general backup plan.
