An event planner is responsible for ensuring that some of the most important occasions in people’s lives flow smoothly. As such, the following event planner interview questions and answers will help your prospective employer learn more about you, your methods and your ability to fulfill the needs of their company.
What Are the Most Important Characteristics of an Event Planner?
Your interviewer may ask you this question in order to determine your thoughts on the industry as well as the aspects of the job that you feel are the most crucial. You should respond with an answer that reflects the importance of organization, time management skills, multitasking abilities, and the ability to stay calm in stressful situations. You may also choose to touch upon the importance of people skills; these are important for building a rapport with photographers, caterers and other professionals who will participate in ensuring the success of any event.
What Do You Feel Are the Greatest Challenges of the Job?
With this question, your interviewer hopes to learn the things that you may struggle with and your methods for handling them. As an example, you may say “The need to multitask and ensure that groups of people work together in order to meet a specific and inflexible deadline is by far the greatest challenge associated with planning an event.” However, it is also important to follow this up with some information that proves you are up to the task of handling such a challenge. “Despite this, I feel that my ability to pay attention to detail and anticipate any issues that may arise is a strong asset. With it, I can ensure that everyone is on par and that the deadline is met.”
Are You Okay with Traveling and Working Long Hours?
You likely already know that event planning is not your average nine-to-five job. Although you will spend some time in an office coordinating different aspects of the event, you will also be called upon to travel—sometimes hundreds of miles—to attend the actual event. Your presence will be necessary for providing support and service throughout the event. A great answer should ensure your interviewer that you are familiar with the requirements of the job and that you are prepared to meet them. “I am aware that planning an event sometimes requires long hours and travel. My schedule will always remain flexible since the satisfaction of my clients is my top priority.”
In the Past, Have You Worked as an Employee or a Freelancer?
The experience you have as an event planner can also say a lot about your abilities to fulfill the responsibilities of the position for which you are interviewing. There are benefits to both experiences. As a freelancer, you are able to take initiative and ensure that events flow smoothly without supervision. However, as an employee, you can prove your ability to take instruction and work with an entire group of planners.
Although the questions you may be asked during your interview will vary slightly, these four will provide you with an opportunity to really shine. Above all else, you should portray your flexibility, your organizational skills and your willingness to learn.
