Dear Human Resources Director:

My name is Justin Dobbs and I am graduating next week from XYZ Art Institute. I have been working this last semester as an intern in your graphic design department at ABC Web Designs and would like to apply for a permanent job as a graphic designer with your firm. I am graduating with honors from XYZ where I served my senior year as president of the college chapter of the American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA). I believe that, between my formal education at XYZ and my practical experience gained during my internship at ABC, I am well-prepared for a position as a junior graphic designer.

While in school I learned how to design and tweak logos, brochures, signs, illustrations and graphics for web pages. We were privileged as students to have access to a state-of-the-art design studio with cutting edge computer technology. I am proficient on the Adobe Creative Suite, Illustrator, PhotoShop and InDesign for 2D graphics. On 3D graphic projects I have experience using 3ds Max, Lightwave and Maya. I plan to stay current with all new technological developments in computerized graphic design and 3D animation through continuing education programs.

During my internship at ABC I worked on the overhaul of the BBB Wedding Cakes, Ltd website making it interactive and using Maya software to convert the cakes on the site to 3D animation images. I also had the privilege of working on the AAA Amusement Park website upgrade using 3ds Max to take viewers on a real thrill ride. I have enjoyed every minute of my internship at ABC and hope to find a permanent place there as a graphic designer.

My resume, which is attached, includes a reference letter from one of my professors as well as another reference letter from the director of the interior design department at ABC. Please feel free to call me for an interview at (555)-555-5555 or email me at [email]

Warm Regards,

Justin Dobbs

Example 2 -Unadvertised Opening

This graphic designer cover letter example is from a person who is working as a graphic designer at a small suburban firm. The applicant wishes to transition to a more challenging position at a larger urban firm. He has been taking continuing education courses to hone his graphic design skills.

Dear Human Resources Director:

My name is Allison Roberts and I am a 2009 graduate of the Graphic Design Program at ABC Tech. For the past 3 years since graduation I have been working at a small but well-respected graphic design firm in Dalton, Georgia called Dalton Designs. Although I have learned a great deal at the firm and I love my work as well as the beauty of the North Georgia Mountains, it has always been my dream to work at XYZ Graphics in Atlanta amid the bustling excitement of the big city.

While in my position as a graphic designer at Dalton I was able to educate the owners about some of the more recent developments in design software. They were receptive to new ideas and purchased the Adobe Illustrator and InDesign programs to go with the PhotoShop and other Adobe products already loaded on their system. With the newer technology they were able to expand their service offerings for their clients and generate additional revenues for the company.

Although my employers in Dalton have not advanced to the point of offering 3D graphic designs yet, I have been taking night classes through an extension of ABC Tech located in Dalton. I have currently mastered and received a certificate in 3ds Max computer graphics and am now half way through classes in Lightwave. I plan to go on to learn the latest in the Maya Suite once I complete Lightwave. It is my goal to stay abreast of all of the latest graphic design technology at it is developed.

My resume is attached and includes a letter of recommendation from Mr. Grant Hughes, one of the owners of Dalton Designs. I hope that you will consider me for a position as a graphic designer at XYZ Graphics when one becomes available. I am available for a phone or a personal interview any time at your convenience. I can be reached at (555)-555-5555 or by email at [email]

Sincerely,

Example 3 – Response to Job Postings and Classifieds Ads

This graphic designer cover letter example is from an individual who has been working for 2 years as a graphic designer in a Nashville, Tennessee firm. He is now applying for an open job position at a competing graphic design firm that is larger and handles more complex design jobs.

Dear Ms. Norris:

My name is Daniel Parks and I am applying for the open position of graphic designer in your advertising department. I have 2 years’ experience working on ad designs at ABC Graphic Designs, Inc.; however it has always been my goal to work as a graphic designer in the advertising department at XYZ Innovations.

I graduated in 2010 with honors from State University with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Graphic Design. My minor was computer programming which gives me an edge over other designers with no programming education. In fact, I have saved ABC money on their outsourcing budget by handling some of the easier programming issues in house.

I have experience handling the graphic design portion of an ad campaign from the initial idea pitched to the client to the final magazine spread. I also have experience designing brochures, company logos, billboards and newspaper ads.

Your job advertisement indicates that you are looking for a graphic designer with experience designing websites. That is exactly what my focus has been for the past year. I have worked solely on graphic design projects for websites for the past 12 months. I have greatly enjoyed the opportunity to be creative and innovative on the website design projects, and my attached rйsumй includes 2 letters of reference from 2 clients whose company websites I designed, along with a small portfolio showing some of my work.

I would greatly appreciate the opportunity to interview with you and any of the graphic design management staff. I believe my experience, desire to work for XYZ Innovations and determination to turn in the highest quality work on deadline will make me an excellent fit for your advertising department. I am available via phone at (555)-555-5555 or email at [email] should you have any questions. Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,
