Dear Principal Jackson:

My name is Sherry Cole and I am submitting my resume for your consideration. I would like to apply for a position teaching art history at the ABC Art Magnet School. In the event that you have no openings now I hope that you will keep my resume on file. I currently teach art history, honors and advanced placement at XYZ High School. Although I love my job here, I would welcome the opportunity and additional challenge of teaching the exceptionally gifted art students at the ABC School. I have a number of ideas to better engage art history students that I believe would benefit the students at ABC.

I have a Bachelor’s Degree in Greek Culture from Mercer University and a Master’s Degree in Art History from the University of Georgia. I have been teaching at XYZ High School for the past 8 years and 4 years ago I was approved to teach Honors and Advanced Placement courses. I also started an Art Club at the school 3 years ago and have taken the students in the club to the High Museum and other exhibits and galleries in the city. My passion is art and I enjoy sharing its history and beauty with young minds. It is particularly rewarding to work with students who share my passion for art and want to learn as much as possible about its rich history.

It is my desire to share my knowledge and love for art with the gifted students at ABC Art Magnet School. I would appreciate your consideration of my enclosed resume. In addition, I can provide special lesson plans I have developed for my advanced art history students as well as several articles I have written that have been published in art journals. Example 2 -Unadvertised Opening

This teacher cover letter example is for a director at a ballet school. It is from a ballet teacher who works at another school. Although there are currently no job openings at the ballet school, the applicant is asking that her resume be kept on file for any future openings.

Dear Madame LaSalle:

It has been my goal for several years to teach ballet at the ABC School of Dance Arts. I know that you have no positions available at this time, but I hope you will keep my resume on file in the event a position becomes available. I have been teaching ballet at XYZ Dance School for the past 5 years. Although I am happy with my work here, I would welcome the challenge of working with students at a school that feeds into a professional company. I have actually recommended several of my gifted students here at XYZ for auditions at ABC and they have been accepted into your apprentice program at the ABC Dance Company.

I taught Russian School ballet technique for 2 years at XYZ, and for the past 3 years I have been teaching Italian School technique. Our director believes it is important for students to learn both techniques and I could not agree more, although I personally prefer the Italian technique. In addition I take our high school aged students on 2 field trips each year. The first is in the spring when I take students to see the opening night of the new season’s performances by the LMN Modern Dance Company. The second performance they attend is during the Christmas break when I take them to see your very own Nutcracker Ballet performed at the ABC Dance Theater.

I have a Bachelor’s Degree in Classical Ballet from the North Carolina School of the Arts. Immediately after graduation I did a one year internship at the La Scala Theatre Ballet in Milan where I learned even more about Italian School technique. This was followed by 6 years of performing and touring with the Joffrey Ballet in New York. I know all the classic female roles. I left Joffrey 5 years ago to get married and settle down here in Sacramento. My husband and I have a two-year-old daughter. I hope that you will consider me for a future position at ABC. Please feel free to contact me if you require more information.

Sincerely,

Example 3 – Response to Job Postings and Classifieds Ads

This teacher cover letter example is written to a primary school principal in response to an ad for a teaching position that was advertised in a newspaper and online. It is from a public school teacher who is seeking a position as a kindergarten teacher at an exclusive private school.

Dear Principal Evans:

My name is Katherine Ross and I am responding to the ad in the Denver Post online for a kindergarten teacher at ABC Private Primary School. My resume is attached and I am available for an interview or telephone conversation at your convenience. I am currently teaching kindergarten at XYZ Elementary School where I have had the privilege of working for the past 7 years. Although I enjoy my work with the wonderful students at XYZ, I would welcome the additional challenges offered at a private school that has a larger budget for more enrichment classes for kindergarteners. It is my goal to be a kindergarten teacher at ABC where I hope to bring my ideas for a more diverse kindergarten curriculum.

I hold a Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood Development from Colorado College and a Master’s Degree in Education from the University of Denver. Your job description indicates that you require a kindergarten teacher who is also certified to teach a foreign language. I have had that required certification for the past 4 years and have been teaching Spanish to my kindergarteners at XYZ since earning the certification. It is absolutely true that the younger children are, the faster they absorb a foreign language. Sadly, budget cuts have done away with the Spanish program at XYZ and beginning this fall I will no longer be teaching the language to my students.

Additionally you indicated that you would like to begin taking kindergarteners on art-related field trips. My minor at Colorado College was art and I enjoy sharing the beauty of paintings and sculptures with my kindergarteners. I believe it is important to expose children to cultural activities at a young age so that they grow up with an appreciation for more than video games. I take my students at XYZ to visit the Children’s Museum of Denver during the fall semester each year and in the spring I take them to the Denver Art Museum. I believe I have the precise qualifications you are seeking and hope you will consider me for the available kindergarten teacher position at ABC Private Primary School.

Respectfully,
