An architect cover letter should accompany every resume you send out to prospective employers and each letter should be written uniquely for each employer. The letter should introduce you to a potential employer, explain why you are interested in a position with the company and discuss the value you could add to the organization. It is important that you do not just reiterate what is in your resume. The letter should add a personal touch along with highlights of your experience that is most relevant to the job. Here are some architect cover letter samples you can use to create your own letter.
Example 1 – Target to Company
This architect cover letter example is from an individual who wishes to obtain a position at a larger architecture firm. He has been working for a small firm for several years and wants to work on advancing his career by transitioning to a company that handles larger, more complex assignments.
Dear Mr. Dashwood:
Please accept my application and resume as I am applying for a position as an architect with your firm. ABC Architecture Associates has been a leader in the industry for many years and it would be my honor and privilege to work for a firm of this caliber. I am willing and able to work long hours to meet a deadline. I actually thrive under pressure and I am intensely ambitious in my career goals and objectives.
I have been employed by XYZ Designs since 2009 where I began working immediately after earning my Master’s degree in Architecture from Georgia Institute of Technology. I have worked on a variety of projects around the metropolitan Atlanta area including luxury homes in the John’s Creek and Heron Glen developments, commercial and industrial buildings in the Chattahoochee and Town Park areas, urban design in the Atlantic Station expansion as well as some heritage and conservation work in the Peachtree Battle area.
I possess excellent computer and technical skills with advanced knowledge of Adobe, Auto CAD, 3ds Max, Maya and Revit and I am a quick study on new graphics and design programs. While at XYZ I was trained in and now have a working knowledge of contracts administration as well. I am extremely detail oriented and have strong problem solving skills that enable me to complete every project accurately and to the highest standard possible. I have excellent interpersonal and communication skills and can function well as a team member or as a leader.
The prospect of working for ABC Architecture Associates is exciting as I know that the firm specializes in environmental design and this is my greatest area of interest. The recent work I did at Peachtree Battle and Atlantic Station had environmental design elements and I found that I have a passion for this type of architectural design. Please review my attached application, resume and selections from my portfolio. I am available for an interview at your convenience and I can be reached on my cell phone at 555-555-5555 or via email at [email]
Example 2 -Unadvertised Opening
This architect cover letter example is from an individual who recently graduated with a Master’s degree in Architecture and is looking for a job with an urban firm. She is applying for positions at many different companies including one where she had an internship during her last year of graduate school.
Dear Human Resources Director:
My name is Louisa Fields and I just graduated from the University of Virginia with a Master’s degree in Architecture. I had the privilege of working as an intern at the Washington D.C. branch of ABC Architectural Design Specialists last year and would like to apply for a position as a junior architect. Attached along with my application, resume and student portfolio is a letter of reference from Ms. Jackie O’Neil who was my manager at ABC during my internship.
My experience and the specific skills I have honed thus far include project management with emphasis on creativity, project development from client concept and historical renovation. During my internship at ABC I assisted Ms. O’Neil with the recent renovations to the historic Jefferson Hotel. I am LEED certified and committed to green construction and the use of sustainable materials which I know is important to the management at ABC.
While doing my graduate work I also became interested and studied extensively in the areas of contract negotiation, budgeting and client consultation. Toward the end of my internship at ABC Ms. O’Neil allowed me to sit in and observe a client contract negotiation and several budget meetings. These were extremely valuable experiences that helped me understand the practical side of architecture which goes hand in hand with the creative aspect.
I hope that you will consider me for a position as a junior architect at ABC Architectural Design Specialists when one becomes available. I believe I have a unique understanding of the mission of the firm and management’s commitment to excellence having interned there for 6 months. I would welcome the opportunity to come to your office for an interview and can be reached on my cell phone any time at 555-555-5555 or via email at [email]
Example 3 – Response to Job Postings and Classifieds Ads
This architect cover letter example is from a person who is moving to a different city because of his fiancй’s job transfer and is looking for employment. He is an experienced architect at a residential firm and wishes to find a job in his new home doing similar architectural work.
Dear Mr. Armstrong:
I am responding to your ad in the Boston Globe online for an experienced residential architect. I have recently moved to Boston from Providence, Rhode Island due to my fiancй’s job transfer. I worked for 3 years as an architect at XYZ Residential Designs in Providence. I graduated from Cornell University in 2009 with a Master’s degree in Architecture and I earned my Bachelor of Arts in Interior Design from the Pratt Institute in New York City. I believe I have a great deal to offer The Advanced Design Firm in residential architecture due to my degrees in both interior design and architecture.
In addition I am highly skilled on the latest versions of Auto CAD, Maya, 3ds Max and Revit. I make it a point to stay current on all of the new technology associated with residential architectural design so that I can offer clients the very best service. I have experience with contract negotiation, budgeting, consultation and project management. I am LEED certified and strongly believe in using sustainable building materials as well as inclusive design wherever possible.
Along with your company’s application, I have included my resume, a portfolio of selected residential projects and a letter of reference from one of the managing partners at XYZ Residential Designs. I have a passion for and considerable experience in historic renovations of residential properties as well as new construction of homes that mimic the traditional architecture of the mid-1800s to early 1900s. I know that this type of work is something in which The Advanced Design Firm is highly invested, and I believe I could enhance your offerings in this area.
I hope that you will consider me for the available position of residential architect with your firm. I am available for a telephone or personal interview anytime at your convenience. You may contact me on my cell phone at 555-55-5555 or via email at [email]
