With insurance rates of all types spiraling up each year, a risk manager job description is becoming increasingly important. A risk manager is responsible for assessing and handling all potential and actual risks company-wide in an effort to minimize accidents, lawsuits and insurance costs.

Position Description

The risk manager has the task of handle all safety and insurance issues throughout the company for the purpose of eliminating as much exposure to lawsuits and insurance claims as possible.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities of a Risk Manager

Identifies risk and works to minimize or eliminate the source of the risk with the goal of preventing injury to an employee or the public as well as avoiding legal liability and lawsuits.
Analyzes areas where the company may be open to litigation and makes changes in company policies and procedures in order to fix the problem.
Transfers or terminates employees who consistently pose risk to the company.
Communicates risk issues to management along with a plan for minimizing or eliminating the risk.
Produces analysis and status reports detailing the level of risk associated with various departments and functions in the company.
Testifies in court on behalf of the company in the event that a lawsuit is brought against the company.
Files claims to insurance companies and determines cost allocation for insurance policies.
Participates in union negotiations.
Inspects various departments on a regular basis to check for risks that are avoidable.
Creates, implements and modifies as needed an employee safety program.
Writes, edits and alters as necessary an employee safety manual.
Directs engineering and safety departments to ensure both are compliant with safety codes and regulations.

Displays strong interpersonal skills and the ability to teach or instruct effectively.
Speaks Spanish or other languages in order to communicate well with the segment of the employee population that speaks another language.

Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree in risk management.
Master’s degree in risk management or business administration.
Experience working in a risk management department.

Work Environment
Works normal business hours of 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Fridays.
Spends a significant amount of time in meetings, in training sessions and visiting various departments and floors to assess risk.

The salary of a risk manager ranges from $75,000 to $150,000 a year.
