Summary

A cosmetologist is a professional who gives beautification services such as hair and makeup, manicure and pedicure and spa treatments. He/she is knowledgeable in cosmetic tools and techniques to make people’s hair, nails and skin fresh-looking and more beautiful. Most licensed cosmetologists start their own beauty salon or spa, while others work as freelancers and offer door-to-door services.

Duties

Cosmetologist’s duties may vary upon their title, specialization, place of employment and education level. For example, barbers shampoo, style or trim hairs and shave men’s facial hair. Hairdressers or hairstylists, who are graduates of cosmetology schools, may perform a wide range of services, including shampooing, cutting, coloring and styling hair. Some are trained in skin and nail treatments. Skin care specialists and Estheticians, who are trained to remove hair by waxing or electrolysis, give massages, facials and other skin regimens. Make-up artists are experts in makeup application, also offering trainings and advices to clients. Nail technicians are experts in manicure, pedicure, nail coloring, nail art and extensions, hand and feet care. Shampooers give clients excellent shampooing, conditioning and hair treatments, wigs and toupees are not an exception.

Education and Training Requirements

Potential cosmetologist should obtain training in vocational schools that provide full-time courses with duration of six to twelve months. Some cosmetologists possess a high school diploma with relevant training, while others attend cosmetology courses that take two to three years to complete. One-to-two years of training and apprenticeship is followed by a licensing exam, which is required to be renewed every year or two.

Knowledge and Skills Requirements

Passion for art and expression through her creation is what makes a successful cosmetologist. Keeping up with the fashion trend, learning new procedures, visualizing different styles and advising clients on what suits them best is a plus factor. Listening and talking skills is a must have in order to achieve a good result.

Working Conditions

A cosmetologist’s working environment is strictly sanitized, well ventilated and well lighted. They usually work five to six days a week, for about 40 to 50 hours including weekends and holidays. Most cosmetologists get nicks and cuts from razors, scissors and experience minor burns from instruments and hot towels. Some experience skin irritations from chemicals used in grooming.

A beginner cosmetologist earns from $ 13,000 to $ 30,000, an expert or professional may earn between $30,000 to $50,000 like in any other profession this may vary from the level of education, work experience and expertise plus the location or work setting. Cosmetologist also often receives tips from satisfied clients.
