Position Description

The housekeeping supervisor is the lead housekeeper on a team; he or she will be required to oversee all housekeeping duties within a particular facility or on a particular team.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities of a Housekeeping Supervisor

  • Supervises housekeeping staff as duties are being performed.
  • Supervises the duties and tasks of laundry staff.
  • Stocks and maintains supply rooms; orders supplies according to a budget.
  • Receives, processes, and handles guest complaints in regard to housekeeping services.
  • Ensures that rooms are kept clean and free from hazards.
  • Ensures that all common areas are kept clean and free from hazards.
  • Organizes all staff during the day and hosts daily meetings with housekeeping staff.
  • Assists guests or patients with questions and basic requests.
  • Provides a high level of customer service at all times; remains professional.
  • Hires and fires housekeeping staff; trains new housekeepers after hire.
  • Meets with company officials regularly in order to provide progress reports and address issues.

Education and Experience

In order to become a housekeeping supervisor, no special education is needed outside of a high school diploma or a GED. Advancement opportunities can be increased if the candidate chooses to earn an Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in business management or a related field, but this advancement is limited with companies which have a small staff. In larger companies, these degrees as well as experience may provide for further advancement in the future as additional positions are typically created when there are more housekeeping employees.

Work Environment

A housekeeping supervisor is required to perform the same housekeeping tasks as the individuals they supervise, so the work environment fluctuates based upon the types of services being performed as well as the facility in which the individual is working. In some cases, these individuals can be exposed to hazardous materials whether in the form of chemical or medical waste. Workweeks are traditionally 40 hours and five days, but overtime may become necessary in the event that the workload becomes great.
