Summary

An assistant security manager assists the security manager in overseeing all aspects of the Security Department. He/she is in charge of developing security measures and assuring the overall security of all members of the organization.

Duties

The assistant security manager is responsible for assisting the security manager in coordination of security operations, as well as managing, training, and assessing performance of the entire security personnel. Assistant security managers help in writing and developing security policies and procedures for the security department, oversee all necessary training modules and procedures for security staff, and provide protection to important persons when necessary. They may also monitor all unauthorized vandalism and removal of property, review and report accidents that happened within the vicinity, inspect all areas for safety and fire hazard; and file reports on safety precautions. Assistant security managers are also responsible for conducting internal investigations when necessary, providing courteous service, managing the schedules of security personnel and tracking their attendance.

Education and Training Requirements

An assistant security manager must have a minimum of at least two years of college with specialty, experience or training in law enforcement, medical training, fire fighting, military or business management. Organizations or companies look at the level of training of an assistant security manager superior to his level of educational attainment. They prefer potential candidates to have had their training from reputable security agencies. Experience in managerial positions may also be an advantage. Licensures may differ by state.

Knowledge and Skills Requirements

An assistance security manager must be able to solve practical problems quickly and efficiently when the need arises. He must be able to handle paperwork and fill out reports for management. He must be able to communicate well and be suspicious with all activities happening inside the establlishment at all times. He must effectively respond to questions and concerns raised by top management, customers and security staff as well as. He must be physically fit to take down intruders if necessary. He must possess supervisory and management skills as he takes the place of the security manager when he is not available.

Working Conditions

Assistant security managers commonly roam around the establishment’s vicinity in order to check for possible intruders or interruptions in the security system. If the assistant security manager is not doing rounds, he/she completes paperwork or monitors security cameras inside an office. The job may also require working on different shifts even during evenings, weekends, holidays and special events, but normally follows a 40-hour a week schedule.

Salary

The average annual salary of an assistant security manager is $51,000, which will also depend on the location, size and industry of the establishment he is employed in. Other factors such as training and experience may significantly increase his earnings as well.
