Information analysts must be proficient in information technologies needed in developing information systems and generating accurate reports or forecasts.

Duties:

Information analysts are primarily concerned with conducting analysis, developing information systems, and generating accurate and comprehensive reports on operational data. Though their tasks may vary according to industry and specialty, information analysts usually collect, calculate, and check information from various data sources in order to devise solutions, design systems, and implement information management processes. They are required to cooperate and communicate well with other personnel across departments in order to explain and assist in the integration of information management and data communication systems. Additionally, information analysts may recommend other methods and technology derived from the gathered data to maximize the efficiency of project implementation.

Education and Training Requirements:

To become a successful information analyst, a bachelor’s degree in business administration, computer science, engineering, mathematics, and other related fields is valuable and typically required, except for entry-level positions in some companies. Certain positions require additional training related to the company’s industry and specialization, a master’s degree in business or computer related course, licensing and additional certification.

Knowledge and Skills Requirements:

An information analyst must possess excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, advanced technical writing skills, good interpersonal and communicating skills, as well as an in-depth understanding of business procedures. It is also essential to have an extensive knowledge in information technology, analytical software and database programs, operating systems and computer hardware platforms.

Working Conditions:

Information analysts usually work in organized and well-equipped offices. They may be required to travel to visit companies and clients, and work long hours depending on deadlines and project demands. Information analysts may also work extended hours in order to perform system implementation, troubleshooting, data collection and research, which require after office hours.

The average annual salary of an information analyst may range from $50,000 to $60,000. The annual salary may vary extensively across companies, its size and success, benefits, geographical region, types of industry, field of expertise and experience. Financial analysts may earn a median annual salary that can range from $55,000 to $100,000. Performance bonuses and company benefits can also greatly increase the total earnings.
