Detail-oriented Kennel Attendant Job Description

Summary:

A Kennel Attendant’s job varies from kennel to kennel but in general, they are required to provide food and water, medicate, perform minimal grooming, and provide exercise to various types of animals. They ensure needs of the animals are met and maintains the cleanliness of their living space. This position is designed for an individual who enjoys being around animals.

Duties:

Kennel Attendants are accountable for keeping the animals fed and restocking supplies, removing litter and leftover food, collecting and getting rid of fecal matter, disinfecting the area and replacing the cleared materials. Other tasks may also include transporting the animals to a different area; and carrying out specialized bathing, grooming, and exercise routines. Some facilities would expect their attendants to assist in the administration of euthanasia, breeding, and birthing process and other basic procedures. Other duties may include observing animals and checking for signs of disease, illness, or discontent; promote sales of retail products; ascertain and handle problems in cases where clients are dissatisfied with the service; and maintaining equipment used and making sure they are in good working condition.

Education and Training Requirements:

A High School or General education diploma is enough to qualify for a Kennel Attendant position, although having experience in dealing with animals is an advantage. Employers each have their own sets of educational requirements. Some would require applicants to have taken college-level courses in zoology, veterinary, or any related program. Others may also require continuing education.

Knowledge and Skills Requirements:

Aside from the general care of animals, it also helps to be well organized and good at prioritizing tasks since some Kennel Attendants are also required to do inventory and customer service related tasks. Having good communication and problem solving skills will also be a plus. It is also important to be a team player because you will not only be working with other attendants, but also with technicians and veterinarians.

Working Conditions:

Kennel Attendants who work full-time are often required to work on weekends and some holidays. However, some companies offer part time positions, which are ideal for students. The job requires some lifting and walking. The working environment involves constant odor of animal waste. Kennel attendants should also possess a subjective attitude when dealing with nonconventional practices like euthanasia.

The typical salary of a Kennel Attendant is $24,000. Average salaries of kennel attendants can vary greatly due to company of employment, area, industry, experience acquired, and benefits.
