A supply chain manager oversees the buying, selling, and distribution of products for a mid to large-sized company. The job description of a supply chain manager involves excellent organizational skills, a background in business or finance, a sound knowledge of market trends, and an awareness of a store or store chain’s sales activity.
A supply chain manager purchases items for a store or a chain of stores, coordinates orders and shipments so that items are neither overstocked nor out of stock, and negotiates with distributors to acquire the best price for store products.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities of a Supply Chain Manager
•Consults with company management to determine supply budget.
•Places orders for supplies.
•Creates strategic plan for recurring future orders.
•Ensures that all supply orders arrive on time.
•Ensures that all expenditures fall within designated budget.
•Reviews shipments to check for delivery errors or defective items.

Education and Experience

•Previous experience in a supervisory capacity is strongly preferred.
•Time is split between store visits, warehouses, factories, and distributing locations.
•Local and national travel will be required to check on various shipments.
•Some warehouse conditions may be hazardous so protective gear should be worn during visits.
•40-hour workweek applies though some overtime may be required.
•The average salary for a supply chain manager is between $80,000 and $90,000 per year.
•Salaries range from $65,000 to $120,000 depending on company profile and years of experience.
