Parking Ticket Appeal Letter

Any time citizens feel they have been issued a parking citation unfairly they are free to write a parking ticket appeal letter. It is important to make sure the letter is sent to the right department and that it is addressed to a person who handles such appeals.

Format and Content

Be sure to note the date, time and place where the citation was received in your parking ticket appeal letter format. You should also include the citation number. The letter should be clear and concise and you should explain carefully and in polite terms why you believe the citation should not have been issued. Calling ahead to find a person to whom the letter should be addressed is a good idea.

In this case, an individual was issued a parking citation for parking on the street and not putting money in the meter; however the person parked after 6:00p.m. at which time parking was supposed to be free. A new sign installed by the city stated that when parking after 6:00p.m. it was not necessary to put money in the meter. A police officer left a citation on the individual’s windshield anyway and this parking ticket appeal letter sample is asking that the citation be dropped due to the instructions on the newly installed sign.

Dear Mr. Scott,

Thank you for taking my call this morning and instructing me on how to appeal my parking ticket. I believe my ticket was issued in error and that is the reason for my appeal.

As we discussed, new signs were just erected on Monday, September 9, 2013 all around the Town Square in Irondale. The signs apply to the parking meters that have been located at each parking space for many years. Each sign clearly states that individuals parking in the spaces after 6:00p.m. are not required to put money in the parking meters. The parking charges are in effect from 6:00a.m. to 6:00p.m. according to the signs.

I parked on Main Street in front of the Irondale Theater on Thursday, September 12 at 7:00p.m. I was going to see a movie at 7:30p.m. I did not put money in the meter at my parking space because the sign clearly stated money was only required between the hours of 6:00a.m. and 6:00p.m. When I came out of the theater at 10:15p.m. after seeing the movie I found a parking ticket on my windshield for the violation of not putting money in the parking meter.

It is my belief that the officers that patrol the parking areas on the Town Square were not notified of the new parking rules that began on September 9. I am asking that my Citation 98741236, which is clearly dated September 12, 2013 after the new rules began, be dismissed in light of the new parking rules that were instituted on September 9. Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,

Matthew West
