An academic application letter is used to gain the attention of a particular college or university with an open position. To be effective, the letter must be tailored to the specifics of the educational institution. The letter must highlight your skills and strengths as they apply to the opening as well as your educational accomplishments.The goal of the letter is to convince a hiring institution that you are a good fit for the position and deserving of an interview.

Format and Content

The academic application letter format is longer than the average cover letter. Write in a concise, professional manner that conveys enthusiasm. Include a statement of why you are the best fit for the position in the opening paragraph, along with the position name and where you learned of the job opening. The body of the letter should demonstrate your value with examples of your achievements and work history. Use formal titles and direct the letter to a specific individual whenever possible.

Sample

This academic application letter sample is written by a professor at a 4-year college who wishes to teach at the graduate level. The applicant explains her teaching philosophy and the benefits she believes the method provides for her students. She lists the personal attributes she believes are necessary for the position and offers to send additional information, such as teaching evaluations and recommendation letters, upon request.

I have excellent leadership skills and I work very effectively as a sole contributor and in team environments. I am motivated by challenge and I am constantly looking for new ways to improve my teaching skills. I believe in continual learning as a way of life.
