Business Resignation Letter

Being a partner in a business can be a great investment with a lot of personal and financial rewards. However, it is also a big commitment that requires a lot of time and effort, so choosing to resign for personal or health reasons is understandable. If this sounds like your situation, one of the first things you will need to do is to write a formal business resignation letter. This is a good way to help demonstrate to your partners that you do not hold any ill will toward them or wish to burn any bridges.

Format and Content

No matter what type of letter you are writing, you should always pay attention to your grammar and spelling and use your professional letterhead. However, a formal business resignation letter format demands extra attention and care in order to communicate your intentions properly to your partners. Greet your partner before stating your intentions to resign, along with the effective date. They probably have your phone number already, but it is proper to write it down in the letter anyway. Use your closing paragraph to let the partners know how much you have appreciated working with them and that you wish them continued success.

Resigning from a business partnership can be emotionally trying, making it difficult to come up with the right words to say in your letter. Here is a professional business resignation letter sample from a business partner who is resigning from his position due to his declining health. He writes this formal letter to notify the partners of his situation with plenty of time in advance so that they are not left in the lurch. He writes professionally as befitting a businessman but with sincerity.

Dear Mr. Winters,

I am writing this letter to you and the other partners to inform you all that I will be resigning from my partnership in ABC Company. Although I have truly enjoyed working with you in this business, you may already be aware that due to my age and heart condition, my health has been on a noticeable decline in recent months. I have decided that it would be in the best interest of all parties if I were to resign from the business. My last day as a partner will be August 15, 2014, so I hope that you will accept this letter as my official two weeks’ notice of resignation.

I apologize for any inconvenience that my resignation may cause to ABC Company. I would be happy to make time to meet with you to do the necessary paperwork and am willing to do all in my power to make this an easy transition. To discuss this with me further, please feel free to contact me via phone at (555)-555-5555 or email at [email] at your convenience. I look forward to hearing from you on this matter.

Working with ABC Company has been a rewarding, fulfilling experience for me and I feel honored to have been a part of the business. I will surely miss doing my part for the business but know that this is the best option for me at this time. I wish ABC Company every success and hope that our paths may cross again. Thank you for your understanding at this time.

Yours sincerely,

Ryan Bowman
