Immediate Resignation Letter

At some point in your life, you may find yourself in a position where you need to immediately resign from your job, whether due to a time sensitive offer from another company, medical needs, or other pressing reasons. Although you should always write a formal letter when leaving a job, it is especially important to write an immediate resignation letter when you must leave abruptly. This can help show your employers that you have goodwill toward them despite the abrupt resignation and ensure that you still get a positive reference from them.

Format and Content

Your composition should be a formal business letter, cordially written with proper grammar. The usual immediate resignation letter format may have a brief summary of your intentions to resign, the effective resignation date, an expression of gratitude for your experience gained, and contact information. You will see an example below that should help you learn the professional way to sign and date your letter. Print out copies of your finished letter and send them to your supervisor as well as the head of your company’s human resources department.
