Involuntary Resignation Letter

In the workplace, a rare situation can arise wherein you are forced to resign from your position to avoid legal or personal risk. Just like with any other resignation, and perhaps moreso in this situation, you need to write an involuntary resignation letter so that your situation can be officially documented and your employers will read it. Although this may not completely resolve an unpleasant situation, it will at least show that you have done your part.

Format and Content

You need to make sure that your letter contains the actual words “involuntary resignation” in order to get the best results. Your involuntary resignation letter format can contain a brief explanation of the situation, but be sure to limit your writing strictly to the facts. State the date of your resignation, and any other details that may be relevant to this particular situation. Although you may find that the situation stirs up some emotions, try to remain calm when composing the letter and keep the writing. You can send copies of the letter to anyone who may need to read it, at your discretion.

If you are in the middle of a forced resignation, you probably have not been able to put much thought into writing a letter about it. This can put you in a jam, but following someone else’s example is always a good way to get ideas. Here is an involuntary resignation letter sample by an employee who has been receiving some work-related harassment and feels forced to resign in order for the unpleasant situation to stop.

Dear Ms. Greeley,

I am writing this letter because I am forced to notify you of my involuntary resignation from my position at ABC Company. This involuntary resignation will come into effect immediately and I will not be returning to the office. I have received a number of anonymous notes and calls which are suspicious and/or threatening in nature, and I believe that they are a result of my recent communications about certain employees committing violations of company policies.

As you may already be aware, harassment of this nature is very stressful and causes a toll to be taken on my mental and physical health as well as work performance. I could not possibly return to work with this harassment unresolved. If you need to discuss this with me any further, you may contact me by phone at (555)-555-5555 and leave a message or email me at [email] and I will get back with you.

It is my hope that this situation may be resolved by any means necessary and that no other honest team members receive similar negative treatment. I have otherwise enjoyed my time with ABC Company and will remember the good times. I am grateful for the valuable experience I have gained from working there and will carry it with me into all future endeavors. I wish you and ABC Company every success. Thank you for your understanding in this matter.

Yours sincerely,

Jennifer Miller
