Resignation Letter After Maternity Leave

As a new mother on maternity leave, you are not alone if you decide that you just cannot go back to work and leave your new baby, or if it becomes impractical to do so. To communicate your desires to your employers and let them know that you do not plan to return, you should write a formal resignation letter after maternity leave. This is the professional and courteous way to inform the company of your change in plans and ensure goodwill if you ever wish to return.

Format and Content

Since you do not want to damage your relationship with your employers in case you desire to return to work at a later date, you should write your letter as professionally and cordially as possible. Your resignation letter after maternity leave format should include a brief statement of the changes to your plans, your expression of well wishes, and any other important details which may be relevant to your particular situation. Your letter should be signed and dated in the appropriate places and copies sent to both your immediate supervisor and the head of the company’s human resources department.

Sample

Here is a resignation after maternity leave letter sample composed by a new mother who has decided that it is in the best interest of all parties involved if she does not return to work. She lets her boss know that she is willing to assist with prepping a replacement and remembers to say thanks for their understanding.

Dear Mr. Grimes

As you already know, I have been on maternity leave from my position as senior assistant at ABC Company for the past 4 weeks, with my return to work scheduled for January 15, 2014. However, after giving much thought to the situation, it has become apparent that it is in the best interest of myself, my new child and my team members at ABC Company if I resign from my position indefinitely in order to best care for my new family. Therefore, I appreciate your understanding of my plans not to return to work as scheduled.

I would be more than happy to assist in the finding and/or training of my replacement in any way that I can. If any discussion in regards to this is needed, or if you have any questions, I can be contacted by phone at (555)-555-5555 or by email at [email] I will inform my team members and make them welcome to contact me as well.

I am grateful to you and ABC Company for the great experience and cooperation I have enjoyed there over the past few years. Although I will miss everyone at the office, I know I would not be able to properly focus on my work away from my child after such a short maternity leave. I thank you for your understanding and cooperation in this matter.

Yours sincerely,

Carolyn Jensen
