To make the best possible impression on a potential employer, it is necessary that you write an interview thank you letter. It’s best to write this within a day or two of the interview, while you may still be in the mind of the employer. An interview thank you letter will reiterate your interest in the position, demonstrating to a prospective employer that you have a true interest in the job.

Not all job candidates bother to send an interview thank you letter following an interview with an employer. This means that if you do (and you should), you will stand apart from other candidates and make a memorable impression on a potential employer.

1. Address your letter to the recipient. While you may have spoken to several people during the interview process, address your formal letter to the person you feel is most important, or that you spent the greatest amount of time with.

2. Introductory sentence. Begin with a short sentence thanking the interviewer for the time they took to speak with you (mention the date) and for the opportunity to learn more about the business or company.

3. Body of letter. The main portion of your interview thank you letter should briefly reiterate your interest in the position; you should also note one or two key points from the interview. In this brief section, mention again the qualifications that make you the ideal candidate for the job.

4. Close your letter. In closing, write a sentence or two thanking the interviewer for their time and consideration, and for reading your letter. Also offer to provide any further details concerning your qualifications should they need it.

Write your interview thank you letter using simple, basic fonts that are easy to read. Leave plenty of white space around borders for a crisp, professional appearance.

Close by thanking the recipient for their time and for considering you for the job. Also mention that you can supply additional details about your qualifications if needed.
