The legal profession is competitive and an attorney may need help landing a job. Whether a recent law school graduate who is looking for that first job or a practicing attorney transitioning from one employer to another, they both need a recommendation. A reference letter can be most impressive if written by a well-respected law school professor or a partner in a successful law firm. It should clearly identify the applicant and the desired position.
Format and Content
The attorney reference letter format should begin by identifying the position in which the applicant is interested. It is wise to mention the law school the applicant attended, any previous work experience and how many years practicing law. The letter should include honors received in law school and any special recognition earned while practicing law. Writers of reference letters should explain how they know the applicant and why they are qualified to be a reference.
This attorney reference letter sample is from a law school professor and is written on behalf of a recent graduate who is applying for an associate attorney position in a large law firm. The applicant has passed the bar exam and is qualified to practice law in her home state.
|Dear Mr. Bertolli:
It is my privilege to recommend Teresa Holbrook for the available position of associate attorney at XYZ Law Firm. I had the pleasure of instructing Teresa in several courses during her time at ABC University School of Law and found her to be a forward thinking, highly intelligent individual. Teresa was a confident and outspoken participant in class discussions, particularly when the topic was relevant to environmental law which is one of her passions. She graduated with Magna Cum Laude from law school and has passed the North Carolina bar exam, and I am confident that she will make an outstanding attorney.
During her final year here at ABC University Law School Teresa served as the editor of the Law Review. She also worked each summer as an intern at ABC Legal Associates where she received excellent evaluations from her superiors. Teresa has demonstrated exceptional research abilities as well as superior writing skills both in my classes and while working on her internships. While working for ABC Legal Associates Teresa handled sensitive investigative work with discretion and integrity. She also sat in on numerous depositions and provided documentation on victim and witness interviews as well as plea procedures.
It is my hope that you will seriously consider Teresa Holbrook to fill the available position of associate attorney at XYZ Law Firm. I am confident that you will be pleased with her level of expertise, her dedication and commitment to the letter of the law and her willingness to work long hours to meet deadlines and provide superior client service. I will be happy to speak with you personally to discuss Teresa’s qualifications in more detail. You may contact me by phone at 555-555-5555 or via email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
