Resignation Letter to Boss

Even if you have a great working dynamic with your boss, life circumstances may still put you in the position of needing to resign from your job at some point. Since you want to leave on the best terms possible, writing a resignation letter to boss should be your next course of action. This will formally alert your boss to your intentions and the letter will go into your permanent file.

Format and Content

You may be on friendly terms with your boss, but you are still writing as a business professional, so start out on your letterhead and give a formal greeting. Information such as the exact date of your resignation, an explanation if desired, and your contact details should be included next. You may also wish to include any other important information, such as the status of any projects you are working on and whether or not you are willing to help train a replacement. Thank your boss for his or her faith in you. Make yourself a copy to keep for your records and send the letter to your boss directly.

Dear Mr. Lindon,

This letter is to inform you of my upcoming resignation from my position as your assistant at ABC Company. My last day of work will be September 15, 2014, so please accept this letter as my official two weeks’ notice of resignation. I am resigning due to personal reasons and would like you to know that I have enjoyed my time as your assistant and highly value all of the experience and opportunities I have gained.

I will be personally notifying the rest of the team of my plans and making every effort to efficiently transfer responsibilities to the appropriate members. I would like to assure you that I will have all of my current projects finished by the time of my resignation. In addition, if my help is needed in training my replacement, I would be more than happy to assist where needed.
