School Board Resignation Letter

As with most types of official committee, a school board position is usually held by a member for a designated amount of time, called a term. However, there are many reasons why a school board member may need to resign before the term is up, such as health, relocation, retirement, and others. If you are trying to resign from your position in the most gracious and professional way possible, one of the first things you should do is write a formal school board resignation letter. This will officially inform the board of your intentions and show that you are sincere and wish to part ways on good terms.

Format and Content

For the most correct school board resignation letter format, keep in mind that it will be a formal business letter of no more than a single page. Use your opening paragraph to say that you will be stepping down from your position on the board, and why. You should also include contact details and your thanks to the members for their cooperation with you during your time on the board. Be sure the date and your signature are clearly provided in the letter before making copies. Send a copy of the finished product out to either the chairman or all members depending on the situation.

Coming up with the right words to say in a letter of resignation is not always easy, and looking at an example is a great way to get some ideas. Try checking out this school board resignation letter by a member whose declining health necessitates his stepping back from the position. He writes in a businesslike manner, but is not afraid to be sincere and grateful for the cooperation of the board during his time serving with them.

Dear Ms. Velez,

I am writing this letter to inform you of my resignation from my position on the board of ABC Middle School. As you may already know, my health has been in a state of decline in the last couple of years and I have missed many meetings due to hospitalizations. Because of this situation I feel that it is in the best interest of both myself and ABC Middle School if I step down from the board. I will relinquish all of my responsibilities and privileges as a board member effective August 15, 2014. I appreciate your patience and cooperation in this matter.

I regret any inconvenience that my resignation may cause to the school board, and will make all efforts during my last two weeks to help decrease any such inconvenience. Should you have any need to get in touch with me, my telephone number is (555)-555-5555 and my email address is [email] I hope to hear from you soon.

I have greatly enjoyed the cooperative experience of serving on the school board during my term and am thankful for your help and kindness along the way. I am honored to have worked in the capacity of improving the school and its functions for our children and grandchildren and am grateful for your understanding.

Yours sincerely,

Kurt Fellows
